Imran Khan
In the recent past there has been a trend of sorts where a lot of big Bollywood actors have been taking a share in the profits of the film they act rather than opting for a fixed remuneration. Now the latest to join this bandwagon is Imran Khan.

The buzz is that Imran didn’t charge a single penny for his recent release Break Ke Baad but instead is part of a profit-sharing agreement. For all his earlier releases, Imran has always gone in for a fixed remuneration and this is the first time that the young actor has preferred taking a share in the profits. However, it’s debatable whether he made the right choice.

When we contacted producer Kunal Kohli to confirm the same, he said, “I can’t comment on actors’ contracts. It’s not right on my part to do so.”

Rishi Kapoor

After the success of Ayan Mukerji’s directorial debut Wake Up Sid, it was pretty much certain that Ayan would once again be directing close friend Ranbir Kapoor and that too for a Karan Johar production. However, that seems highly unlikely now especially after an episode of ‘Koffee With Karan’ featuring Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone that has not gone down too well with Rishi Kapoor and his family members.

By now its common knowledge that both Rishi and Neetu Kapoor are mighty upset with Karan for the way he conducted that particular episode of ‘Koffee with Karan’. Now Rishi has even gone ahead and given young Ayan an ultimatum that he either chooses to work with Ranbir or Karan. Ayan was instructed in clear terms that if he wishes to direct Ranbir he will have to find another producer.

Rishi has even gone on record and said that his family of Kapoors will not work in any Dharma production film as of now. While Karan is known to play mediator to many fights within the film industry, it remains to be seen who will play mediator this time around in this big fight.

Farah Khan quashes rumours

Shahrukh Khan, Farah Khan

Film people and controversy go hand in hand. Since the time Farah Khan started TEES MAAR KHAN with Akshay Kumar, the media has constantly written about the

fallout between [once] thick pals Farah and Shah Rukh Khan. While the media has constantly speculated that that all’s not well between Farah and SRK, the

latest development seemed to take the ‘bitterness’ between them to a new level.

Reportedly, SRK has prevailed upon the Lullas of Eros to bring TOONPUR KA SUPERRHERO on 24 December, in the same week as Farah’s TEES MAAR KHAN.

“I don’t think there’s any truth to it,” Farah tells me, “SRK would never stoop to that level. I refuse to believe it.” But the fact remains that TEES MAAR

KHAN will not enjoy the solo status any longer, since TOONPUR KA SUPERRHERO will vie for eyeballs and footfalls in the same [Christmas] week. “I am very fond

of Ajay Devgn. But we are not competing with any film. In fact, with one more film in the fray, it pushes me to work harder. I would’ve loved if TEES MAAR

KHAN came without any opposition, lekin kya karen? I am used to having major opponents in the past [OSO and SAAWARIYA were released on the same

day].”

Ramu pitched Vivek against Abhishek?

Ramu pitched Vivek against Abhishek? Click here to add this article to My Clips
By Subhash K. Jha, November 27, 2010 – 12:55 IST

Vivek Oberoi, Abhishek Bachchan

Everyone is wondering why Ram Gopal Varma suddenly decided to move forward his Rakht Charitra (RC) sequel from November 19 to December 3 after making a noise about taking on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish.

The official explanation is, RC2 was not ready on time. That according to a source is pure hogwash.

The real reason why Ramu, the master of marketing manipulations has chosen December 3 is so that he could pitch his Vivek Oberoi starrer against Abhishek Bachchan’s prestigious historical release Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey.

Says the well-informed source, “Ramu likes to create an extra buzz around his films. When Phoonk 2 was released with Chance Pe Dance, Ramu tried to pitch the crow in his horror film against Shahid. Abhishek and Vivek are seen to be at loggerheads. Ramu intends to play up their rivalry. Although both actors have worked repeatedly with Ramu the filmmaker is not averse to deliberately pitching them against one another.”

Ramu feigns ignorance about his marketing maneuver. “The reason Rakht Charitra 2 was delayed is because the post-production took longer than we thought it would. I didn’t even know our film was coming on the same day as Abhishek’s. Not just that, both are based on true stories. Vivek and Abhishek play real- life characters in the two films. Having said that, let me also add that a lot of our marketing focus for RC2 would be on the Tamil superstar Suriya whom I regard as next only Rajnikanth in popularity. Since he’s making his Hindi debut, we’re trying to figure out ways to bring him in front of the Hindi audiences.”

This, according to the source, is exactly why Ramu has chosen to peg his sequel on the old Abhishek-Vivek rivalry. Says the source, “After the rejection of Rakht Charitra in the Northern belt, Ramu can’t take a risk with the sequel. Suriya may be a superstar in the South. In Hindi, even Rajnikanth doesn’t have a market. RC2 has no songs and items to promote. At most, Suriya can do some interviews before its release. He can’t create an excitement around the film.”

Protests Ramu, “We are not insecure about Suriya’s acceptance in Hindi, neither is he. We’ve a fusion-version of Rakht Charitra parts 1 & 2, in Tamil Nadu that we’ll release on December 3. As for the Hindi release, the film will work not because of the actors but the theme.”

It is a question that is being raised to not just the involved party but all of India, as to what occasion will it take for the average Indian man to behave himself in public places. Recently, the lovely actress Gul Panag was ill-treated at the Delhi Marathon by the very people who were participating in it. The actress couldn’t file charges as it is difficult to recognise miscreants who indulge in such obscene acts concealing themselves in numbers. She blamed it on Delhi culture.

Yet again another young actress had to undergo a similar incident. Sonakshi came to attend an event organised by three NGOs in the memory of 26/11 victims at the Gandhi garden near the Mantralaya in South Mumbai. Sonakshi came to the event, sat for an hour and just as she was leaving a large group of people began following her. Among those who were her ardent fans, few were there just to create trouble. Sonakshi sensed something ugly and tried to fasten her stride, but the mob followed relentlessly. Some of them some started saying, “Idhar dekho naa, humse baat karo naa” as they tried coming close and some touched her on her arm and her shoulder. Their behaviour was disgusting and out-of order.

Sonakshi’s bouncers rushed her out of the place and tucked her in the car that sped away. So shaken was the Dabangg girl that she was in tears when she left. It has to be said that such behaviour and that too at an occasion that demands one’s complete respect and harmony, is completely unacceptable.

Gul Panag: I am bound by fake sense of morality

Gul Panag: I am bound by fake sense of morality

By glamsham
Saturday Nov 27 8:00 PM

Rachana, Glamsham Editorial

Ex-Miss India Gul Panag, who is better known for her intense roles in the films like DOR, MANORAMA SIX FEET UNDER, will soon be seen in a women-centric film, TURNING 30, where she plays a 30-year old mature yet a fun-loving person.

She explains the psychological problems, emotions and tribulations of a woman pertaining to that age or what happens when a woman steps into age.

Says Gul, “30 is a critical age. You start getting biological pressure – like family planning, complications post 50, etc, etc. This is an urban phenomenon because in rural areas by 30 women will have two children and her entire routine is occupied by her kids. She doesn’t have time to think about herself and her life. Turning 30 is like an alarm clock at the back of our mind that by this time we want to achieve our set goals. Professionally, both for men and women, by 30 if you have not shown any spark or proved your caliber or displayed your talent then it will never happen. Be it any field, by 30 if you have not displayed your genius then chances are quite rare. That’s what TURNING 30 deals with.”

Further she throws light on her character in the film, “It’s a story about a woman, called Naina, who is about to turn 30, leading almost a perfect life (what with a reputed well-paid job and a boyfriend who she thinks will be there for her forever) till one day when everything goes horribly wrong. Suddenly all her dreams are shattered and she is gripped by various insecurities. Whatever targets she had set for herself to achieve by that age suddenly seem to be unachievable. On one side her world is messed up and other side she is surrounded by this insecurity that she is turning 30. So she goes through all these dilemma.”

Unlike her character in the film, Gul admits that she is not that bold. “Though I am also independent like my character Naina Singh in the film but I am not as gutsy and strong as her. I would love to live the way Naina lives, a liberated and brave life. I am also bound by certain fake sense of morality of society. But that’s how we have to be,” says the 31 year old actress.

TURNING 30 is directed by debutant Alankrita Srivastav, who has been assisting filmmaker Prakash Jha for years now. It also stars Purab Kohli.

Subhash Ghai advices youngsters to drop western clothes

Subhash Ghai advices youngsters to drop western clothes Click here to add this article to My Clips
By Bollywood Hungama News Network, November 27, 2010 – 14:59 IST

Subhash Ghai
Shocking it may sound; but then, a fact is a fact! We are talking about the ‘only-second-to-the-original-showman’ Subhash Ghai. Till date, all of his films were as filmy and as larger than life with a strong thread of modernity. But that seems to be like a thing of the past now! The reason? Well, Ghai now is of the opinion that he wants youngsters to shun Western Culture and avoid jeans.

Subhash Ghai told this as he was addressing the audience who were present at the India premiere of his Bengali film Nauka Dubi at IFFI 2010. Ghai strongly felt that he youngsters today should shed their western faces and ‘masks’ that they are wearing and should become more Indian! He did make it a point to say that over the years, commerciality had virtually taken over technology and art. He also added that the cinema was a great way to incorporate national character in youngsters. And that not just independent or rich cinema, even in an out and out commercial film, here are four-five things which can make someone like a rickshawala stop to think and change his perception about issues.

To a spellbound audience, he duly credited the legendary Ritwik Ghatak (who was his teacher at FTII) for having taught him that being open to all kinds of cinema was important.

Allah Ke Banday

“ALLAH KE BANDAY pays homage to all the kids exposed to offense, misdeeds and crime,” debutant director Faruk Kabir announced to me when he screened for me the first promo of his film. In times when senseless comedies, rom-coms and thrillers are being lapped up at the box-office, here comes a director telling a realistic story of a bunch of bad young men taking up guns when they are preordained to take up education, taking up abhorrence when they are meant to take up love. The consequences are drastic, with these kids turning into negative forces, taking up crime as their mission as grownups as well.

Now this is a parable most directors would fear to make in their debut film, but Faruk seems on a mission to make ALLAH KE BANDAY watchable not only for its genre. The question is, does his statement that ALLAH KE BANDAY isn’t a film about crime, but our society in general come across effectively? Does ALLAH KE BANDAY have the power to magnetize the viewers all across or does it cater to a miniscule audience? Let’s analyze…

The Indian social order is evolving and so is Indian cinema. More and more directors are coming up with fresher ideas to tell tales that highlight and also influence changes in the fabric of our society. Faruk Kabir also seems like a youngster brimming with ideas, having a lot to tell in his own individualistic style. However, ALLAH KE BANDAY is not without its share of flaws. The screenplay vacillates between interesting and not-too-exciting moments.

var zflag_nid=”585″; var zflag_cid=”947″; var zflag_sid=”36″; var zflag_width=”300″; var zflag_height=”250″; var zflag_sz=”9″;

Yet, all said and done, it’s an honest attempt, a notch above the ordinary!

ALLAH KE BANDAY is a film that spans the life of two twelve-year-old boys living in one of the most ruthless slums of Mumbai. From delivering drugs for the Mafia to looting people with their transvestite friend, the two aspire to assert their position in this world of crime. But when they are wrongly convicted for a murder and sent to the Juvenile Reformatory, they discover a world more chaotic and tough to survive in, than the one they left behind.

The senior inmates, with the participation and permission of the dreadful Juvenile warden [Naseeruddin Shah], subject the two friends to all kinds of torture to suppress their sense of power. But not the ones to take it lying down, they start developing a more sinister criminal psychosis, instead of reforming and set on a quest for ultimate power. Set free at twenty three, Vijay [Sharman Joshi] and Yakub [Faruk Kabir] form a gang of teenage boys to rule the slums they were born in. The vicious cycle of life continues.

Does ALLAH KE BANDAY take inspiration from a foreign source? Is it inspired by the gangster flick CIDADE DE DEUS aka CITY OF GOD [2003], as being widely alleged? I would say that the source of inspiration seems more like SLEEPERS [1996], which starred some of the best names in the business [Kevin Bacon, Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, Brad Pitt]. But despite the similarities, I must add that ALLAH KE BANDAY is not only well shot, but makes an equally powerful impact. Besides choosing an offbeat subject for his debut film, Faruk has gone a step further and shot it at real locations too and that, very frankly, takes the film to a different level altogether. The film wouldn’t have worked had the director erected sets of a reformatory or the slums where crime breeds.

On the flipside, the writing isn’t convincing at times. Sharman and Faruk run the show from a dilapidated mansion-like structure in the basti, pushing school-going kids to the world of crime. This is done valiantly, without any fear of law enforcement agencies, which is difficult to absorb. Besides, ALLAH KE BANDAY is dark and like I pointed out earlier, it tries to be as close to reality as possible, in terms of the lingo spoken by the characters or the bloodshed depicted in the film and that could act as a deterrent. Also, the film stagnates in the middle of the second hour, partly because there’s not much movement in the screenplay.

Faruk Kabir makes a powerful impact as a storyteller. His handling of a difficult subject deserves brownie points. The sequences in the reformatory are very well shot. Ditto for the sequence when Sharman encounters Naseeruddin Shah, who is now reduced to a life worse than a beggar. There’s not much scope for music in the film, but I’d like to single out the background score, which complements the goings-on well. The cinematography is eye-catching. The real locations have been deftly captured on celluloid. Dialogue are power-packed at times.

With a talented cast like Naseeruddin Shah, Sharman Joshi, Atul Kulkarni and Zakir Hussain, you expect nothing but the best from each performer. Naseer has limited screen space, but he’s dynamic every time he appears on screen. Sharman depicts the intensity very well. In fact, this is amongst his better works. Atul Kulkarni is wonderful, while Zakir Hussain is top notch. Faruk Kabir enacts a pivotal part himself and must say, he makes you sit and notice his talent as an actor. Anjana Sukhani doesn’t get much scope, while Rukhsaar too gets less screen space. Suhasini Mulay is effective. The two kids, enacting Sharman and Faruk’s parts, are excellent.

On the whole, ALLAH KE BANDAY is a gritty, stimulating and provocative cinematic experience with a flipside: Not many would prefer a dark film about kids taking to crime and felony. Its appeal, therefore, will remain restricted to a niche audience.

Ranbir Kapoor to put on weight for Barfee

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, November 26, 2010 – 17:17 IST

Ranbir Kapoor

Irony cannot get ironical than this! The Gen-Next heart throb Ranbir Kapoor is apparently all set to gain weight for Anurag Basu’s Barfee (which was earlier called as Silence).

Those in the know are aware of the fact that Ranbir’s character has been sketched on the lines of the legendary Charlie Chaplin. But, if the market buzz is to be believed, then, the latest addition is that Ranbir’s character will also flaunt Mr. Bean’s moves. News has it that, while Charlie Chaplin was Anurag’s idea, Bean was Ranbir’s brainwave. And in order to look the part, Ranbir is all set to gain weight.

One can only ‘weight’ and watch to see if Ranbir really lives up to the sweetness of Barfee.

Break Ke Baad

Aditya Chopra’s DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE, Karan Johar’s KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI and Farhan Akhtar’s DIL CHAHTA HAI continue to inspire and motivate film-makers to this date. Danish Aslam’s debut film BREAK KE BAAD borrows from the above-mentioned films, besides Imtiaz Ali’s LOVE AAJ KAL and several other films churned out by Yash Raj and Dharma.

I don’t think it’s sacrilege to seek inspiration from a great film, a taut script or soulful music, but the storyteller ought to take that extra effort to present something more than what we’ve watched before, in his/her film. That’s where BREAK KE BAAD fails to connect.

BREAK KE BAAD deals with space issues in a relationship, a much exploited and abused word used a lot in the present-day scenario. Space is almost like a break-up mantra and BREAK KE BAAD explores this concept rather than being a conventional love story. It has that typical Hollywood inspired urban drollness, approach and responsiveness, but what comes across on screen is a poor replication of romance-laden movies that we have enjoyed over the years.

var zflag_nid=”585″; var zflag_cid=”947″; var zflag_sid=”36″; var zflag_width=”300″; var zflag_height=”250″; var zflag_sz=”9″;

BREAK KE BAAD goes wrong, sorry horribly wrong in its writing. The screenplay is full of glitches, the writing is juvenile, the situations are amateurish and I actually wondered how a shoddy screenplay like the one in BREAK KE BAAD was green-lit and approved in the first place. The intention was to make a cool film for the urban youth, but the writers [screenplay: Renuka Kunzru and Danish Aslam] have messed up and how!

Final word? A boring fare that gets unbearable after a point!

Abhay [Imran Khan] and Aaliya [Deepika Padukone] have known each other since they were kids. Their friendship turned into love at the tender age of 15, when Abhay realized that Aaliya is the girl for him.

Aaliya’s life is defined by her burning desire to become an actress and she is unmindful of what or who comes in her way. Abhay, who is still unsure about what he wants to do, finds himself competing with Aaliya’s incessant plans and projects to fulfill her dreams. Things come to a head when Aaliya decides to go to Australia to study and Abhay has to deal with the prospect of a long-term relationship, secretly fearing that he will lose Aaliya forever.

They decide to give their relationship a break, so that Aaliya can pursue her dreams. As time passes by, Abhay realises his skills, while Aaliya realises that there is no joy in achieving one’s dreams if one has no one to share it with.

The basic idea of BREAK KE BAAD may compel you to think that it’s going to charter a new path completely, but what comes across is a sham. I mean, the lovers break up for a flimsy reason [there's no persuasive rationale actually], then become friends, then go separate ways, then become friends again, then argue animatedly and then get married. Besides, the film is talk-heavy, extremely verbose and the chatter is pointless, senseless and ludicrous.

One fails to understand why the girl drops the guy like a hot brick. Actually, there’s no valid reason for her to do so. He is so committed, so devoted, so trustworthy that any girl would give her left arm to be with him. But the girl comes across as a no-brainer and expectedly, realizes her folly only towards the finale [as expected in a screenplay of convenience]. Besides a faulty screenplay, even the supporting characters [Sharmila Tagore, Shahana Goswami] are wasted.

Director Danish Aslam has handled a few moments well, that’s it. A love story ought to be embellished with a lilting musical score, but Vishal-Shekhar disappoint this time. The songs are strictly okay and one misses that winning track that makes a love story memorable. Cinematography [Andre Menezes] is alright.

Both Imran and Deepika take a step forward as actors. Having watched Imran closely from JAANE TU YAA JAANE NA days, I feel that he has come a long way in his fifth outing and you can see a marked difference in his performance. As far as Deepika is concerned, I like the spontaneity that she brings to the character. After LOVE AAJ KAL, this is another film that will make people sit up and notice her talent. Sharmila Tagore is wasted. Ditto for Shahana Goswami. Yudhishtir Urs irritates. Lillete Dubey gets to deliver some spicy lines. Navin Nischol gets minimal scope.

On the whole, BREAK KE BAAD has a vibrant Imran and Deepika as its USP, but a faulty and an unpersuasive screenplay as is its major stumbling block. Fails to impress!

Its not rocket science that Bollywood Superstar Shahrukh Khan has many firsts and many ‘rare honours’ attached to him. He added yet another rare honour to his credit, when he recently visited the Rotes Rathaus; Berlin’s Town Hall and met its gay mayor Klaus Wowereit. He did so during his visit to Germany, as he is shooting there for Farhan Akhtar’s Don 2.

SRK also got a rare honour of signing the guest book at the Town Hall. By doing so, he became the first Indian actor to be given the honour. Way to go, Shahrukh!

"Unstoppable" movie review

By Yahoo! India Movies
Thursday Nov 25 2:29 PM

Kunal Guha

1 million tonnes of steel, 1,00,000 people at risk, 100 minutes to impact. And your movie hall has how many exits again?

Unstoppable is a movie engineered to excite you if you’re one for American formula thrillers. You know right away that this film is about an unmanned train tooting away at 70 miles (approximately 113 kilometers) per hour wrecking havoc on its trail. But if you are a thriller addict, you can also predict the entire screenplay, as these films are pretty much like each other. So here is the not-so-secret recipe for a Hollywood blockbuster that best defines this film.

1. The movie begins in a calm aimless way. So that you sink into your seat, only to be thrown right out of it later when the thrilling part begins. The lead cast, train conductor Will (Chris Pine) meets veteran train engineer Frank (Denzel Washington) with whom he is supposed to work with. They exchange several sarcastic dialogues and you know what will follow. The classic ‘amateur white man teams up with experienced black man’ routine. They hate each other, don’t respect each other and eventually when they combo up to save the world of a potentially devastating disaster, they get personal and at one point you hope they don’t end up kissing each other. Also they need to have troubled family lives for some reason. So Will is bitter about suspecting his wife on cheating on him and Frank has two daughters who work at Hooters (fair enough).

2. The disaster is triggered off by Dewey (Ethan Suplee) who has made a career out of playing a fat dement (he is Earl’s brother from the TV series ‘My Name is Earl’). Dewey demonstrates his sub-zero intellect when he is asked to move an engine to allow another to move out of the yard. In doing so, he gets off the moving locomotive to correct a technical glitch, leaving the engine on full throttle. No prize for guessing the result. The locomotive gains speed and our rather obese Einstein can’t catch up to re-board and the train speeds out of the yard and into the mainline. And this movie is based on true events? What is the average American IQ again?

3. Now, in the real world, this would be considered a major crisis situation. But in Holly-world, you can’t shove in all the excitement in the beginning. It has to grow over time. So the yard master Connie’s (Rosario Dawson) first plan of action is to send the same idiot Dewey along with another extra to go chase the train in a car and attempt to stop it, while she orders the rail traffic control to clear the tracks.

4. But then big disasters can only be averted through quirky solutions. So Connie also gets Ned (Lew Temple) on the job. Ned is a poor man’s John Lennon, a hippie-turned-welder (yes, they all got real jobs by the early eighties), perpetually dressed as a 70s country musician, with a penchant for flirting with waitresses. Ok! Too much information for someone so insignificant in the movie. Ned gets on his van and is also chasing the runaway train till the last scene. His highlight in the movie is when he gets so excited that he overtakes the train at one point towards the end.

5. You know that character actors are just for comic relief and to make our lead heroes (Frank and Will) look better and braver. So cut back to our duo. As expected, Frank is unnecessarily giving Will a hard time while teaching him a thing or two about the rail system, as they cruise about in a train engine. Connie informs them about the disaster on wheels that is heading bang-on towards them. To add to the excitement they can’t shift tracks for another several miles. Now is when you scream.

6. Such films feed on screams and this film is beautifully grotesque with its VFX to induce just that. The unmanned train rams past cars, smashes boogies of passing trains etc. But this isn’t enough, people want more excitement. So here you go. The runaway train is also tugging along cargo boogies which contain about 30,000 litres of a highly explosive chemical (molten phenol) and the emergency stop button is just above the fuel tank and a lot more, leaving no option to avoid destruction.

7. Now in movies, like in the real world, a catastrophe is not one, until the media doesn’t report it to be. So news channels are constantly airing the progress of the train gone wild with exclusive footage from the helicopter following the train. The only problem is that the voiceover given by the reporter is extremely stupid and obvious. Like when Will actually falls in the shaft between the two trains and visibly injures himself, the voiceover adds, “Looks like Will is hurt.” Really? We thought he was kicking back at a park biting into a blueberry cheese cake!
8. Now every thriller has to have a bad guy who is only interested in the company’s stock price and not about how many lives are lost. So here’s presenting Galvin (Kevin Dunn), Connie’s boss and final decision-maker. His chief role is to stomp over Connie’s ideas on how to tackle this situation just because they would probably mean losses for the company.

9. As this film reaches its last leg and our duo are about to accomplish what everyone else couldn’t, you wonder if they know enough to pull it off. Don’t we need a random technical guy to come and second their plan? That’s when random rail safety expert who was hanging around at the rail traffic control at that very point gets on the call. He assures our daredevils to attempt the feat of trying to pull the train from the back. One of them actually says, “We’re gonna catch that train by it’s tail!”

10. Finally, the day is saved, after many death-defying stunts. Connie comes to congratulate the boys. Her first words are, “I still have just one problem!” The boys are shocked. (Baratiyon ka swagat Pan Parag se hona chahiye?) She smiles adding, “I don’t know which one of you, I should kiss first.” Everyone is relieved.

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, November 24, 2010 – 11:40 IST

The lovely Preity Zinta, a Bollywood star, entrepreneur, cricket fan and now tourism Ambassador. Yes, that’s a new role that she has taken up and if you’re guess is Punjab, we assure you it isn’t. In fact, Preity will now be promoting the enchanting Himachal Pradesh.

She would be making it a point to promote Himachal’s slogan ‘Unforgettable Himachal’ and ‘A Destination for All Seasons and All Reasons’ – both domestically and internationally. It could be because Preity obviously has a soft spot for the destination as she did her schooling from Shimla.

The talks started a few months back when Preity was visiting the state for the IPL matches hosted by the Himachal Cricket Association. Tourism Director Arun Sharma offered her to represent the state and Preity said yes to the offer. The state is in the process of sending her a formal letter. She plans not to charge anything for her services as brand ambassador. Kudos PZ!

Interestingly, Abhishek’s last visit to the state revealed his willingness to be the Brand Ambassador but talks with Preity had come to quite an advance stage thus things with Jr. Bachchan didn’t really materialise. More so, Preity kind of is Himachali and has also featured in the state’s coffee table book – Har Ghar Kuchh Kehta Hai – brought out by the tourism department.

Spotlight on Indian films at Locarno film festival 2011

By India Abroad
Wednesday Nov 24 9:45 PM

Panaji, Nov 24 (IANS) India will feature prominently at the next edition of the prestigious Locarno festival, officials said here Wednesday.

The Locarno officials also said that independent filmmakers in India found it difficult to make films, despite the monumental strength of commercial production.

In a statement issued here, the festival’s artistic director Olivier Pere and head of Locarno’s industry office Nadia Dresti said the festival’s co-production lab ‘Open Doors’ will focus on India in the next edition of the festival.

‘Everybody knows that India outpaces the world in film production, releasing around 1,300 films every year,’ Pere said.

‘But these figures can be misleading. The strength of commercial production, concentrated in the four main linguistic regions should not make us lose sight of the many talented filmmakers across the country who are finding it very hard to express themselves through independent circuits. The next edition of Open Doors will give voice to those artists,’ Pere said.

The Open Doors segment is supported by the Swiss foreign ministry’s agency for development and co-operation and its main objective is to assist the directors and producers of the selected projects to find co-production partners, particularly in Europe.

Prakash Jha will shoot Aarakshan in a residential colony in Bhopal

Prakash Jha will shoot Aarakshan in a residential colony in Bhopal Click here to add this article to My Clips
By Subhash K. Jha, November 24, 2010 – 15:11 IST

Prakash Jha

If Prakash Jha’s Raajneeti was big, his new film Aarakshan will be even bigger. Both the films are located in Bhopal. However, this time, Jha will shoot in a residential colony called Menal City comprising 5000 residents.

The entire colony has been taken over by Prakash Jha’s unit. A tabela (dairy farm) is being built in the colony at the reported cost of Rs. 1 crore. The tabela which will later be gifted to the colony after the shooting is complete, will house dozens of buffaloes and cows which are being transported at this very moment from outside Bhopal into the city.

When contacted, Prakash Jha admits that the huge colony in Bhopal would serve as an extended set for Aarakshan.

Says the director, “I needed a certain quaint suburban look for my film with a criss-cross of clean streets and houses fronted by lawns. What was missing was a tabela. A major part of my plot unfolds on a dairy farm. So my art director, Jayant Deshmukh is building the tabela from scratch at one end of the colony.”

Aarakshan with Mr. Bachchan in the lead got its title extricated from a television serial, which decided to add on the word to its original title just to cash in on hype surrounding Prakash’s film.

Says the irate director, “The serial was originally called Aarmanon Ka Balidan. Suddenly I saw an Aarakshan added at the end of the serial’s original title. I sent the producers a legal notice.”

Jha’s film is inspired by the leader of the masses Jayaprakash Narayan’s movement for job reservation for under-privileged sections of society.

Anti-AIDS groups hail drug but worry over cost (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO – AIDS prevention advocates are hailing a pill newly shown to protect against HIV as a great tool for disease prevention.

But they caution that no drug alone can address social factors blamed for the persistence of the epidemic. And they say concerns remain about who will pay for the costly treatment.

A study released Tuesday showed that daily doses of a drug called Truvada, already used to treat HIV infection, cut the risk of new infections among healthy gay men.

Kyriell Noon of the San Francisco-based Stop AIDS Project said any addition to the HIV prevention safety net is good news. But he said factors, such as lack of access to education and health care that contribute to higher infection rates, do not evaporate when a promising drug comes along.

Truvada, which costs $5,000 to $14,000 a year in the United States, will do little to halt HIV’s spread if the only way to get it is to pay out of pocket, Noon said.

“The history of the HIV epidemic in this country has been a story of disparities,” he said. “I would hate to see this new exciting breakthrough enhance those disparities.”

Noon’s group was among those that helped recruit participants for the study in San Francisco, which has more than one new HIV infection every day, according to the city’s Department of Public Health.

The overall study involved about 2,500 men at high risk of HIV infection in Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, South Africa, Thailand and the United States (San Francisco and Boston).

Dr. Susan Buchbinder, director of the San Francisco health department’s HIV research section, called the findings on the drug a “tremendous step forward.” But she took pains to point out that among the several HIV prevention studies she has overseen, this latest had especially strict requirements for making sure participants stayed on track.

Men taking Truvada had to commit to monthly medical visits and received extensive counseling, including reminders about the importance of condoms. Such reminders seemed to have worked: During the study, risky sex among men taking Truvada declined.

But concern exists that in the real world, some men will see Truvada as a license to be promiscuous and shed precautions such as condoms. A follow-up study will track participants who remain on the drug to see if that happens.

Advocates say that regardless, such worries are why just handing out the drug will not be enough.

“Our goal is to try to combine prevention interventions,” Buchbinder said. “It’s not about just popping a pill every day.”

Yet for many healthy gay men, the question of whether to take a daily dose of Truvada will likely become an important issue.

Public health officials say they are working on defining who falls into the highest risk groups who would benefit most from the drug.

But Jason Meier, 32, has already made up his mind. The self-described single, sexually active gay man from Birmingham, Ala., said he would ask his doctor for the drug.

Meier, a student affairs staffer at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, said that taking one pill a day before contracting HIV is better than taking multiple pills after becoming infected.

“Condoms aren’t 100 percent safe,” Meier said. “In this day and age, you can’t trust a partner to be honest about their sexual activity or history. At some point, you have to take responsibility for safer sexual practices.”

Meier said paying for the drug now makes financial sense compared to the expense of post-infection treatment. But broad government or insurance company funding for the drug for prevention rather than treatment would not come before U.S. Food and Drug Administration Approval.

Even then, funding for the drug as a prevention measure could be divisive in the U.S. if such use is seen as encouraging sexual activity.

For now, the drug’s maker, Gilead Sciences Inc., is still deciding whether to seek federal approval to market Truvada as a way to prevent HIV infection. In the meantime, doctors can prescribe the drug off-label for that use.

But advocates are holding off on recommending that gay men seek out their doctors for prescriptions.

“I think the bigger question will be, will the FDA decide that this study is enough?” said Judy Auerbach, vice president of research and evaluation for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

The foundation’s message to those who ask about the drug will be not to experiment with the drug on your own, Auerbach said. She called the drug “promising” but said all the traditional ways of preventing infection should still be emphasized.

“If you really want to pursue this go talk to your medical provider, and they’ll make an assessment. I think that’s all we can say at this point.”

RGV all set to resume productions

RGV all set to resume productions Click here to add this article to My Clips
By Joginder Tuteja, November 23, 2010 – 14:18 IST

Ram Gopal Varma

After a hiatus, Ram Gopal Varma would be back into the business of making films with a vengeance. He would soon be flagging off multiple films in the year 2011 where he won’t necessarily be coming behind the camera as a director.

“That’s true, I can’t sit quite for long. I have to start new productions now”, confirms Ramu whose last production without him as a director was ill fated Go (2007). On the other hand, his other production Shabri is stuck in the cans for years.

There was a time when Ram Gopal Varma was busy giving breaks to number of first time directors. They could have ranged from spot boys to assistant directors to writers but anyone with promise who caught fancy of Ramu had a good enough opportunity to get a film for himself.

“However, the results weren’t always favourable”, comments an industry veteran, “Look at the line up of such films with first time directors. Except for Shimit Amin (Ab Tak Chappan), Sriram Raghavan (Ek Hasina Thi) and to some extent Chandan Arora (Main Madhuri Dixit Banana Chahti Hoon) and E. Niwas (Shool), none of the others managed to make any niche for themselves.”

His argument does make sense. After all, post their debut films, the makers of Pyaar Tuyne Kya Kiya, Road, Gayab, My Wife’s Murder, James, Mr Ya Miss and Go have hardly made much mark in Bollywood over the decade gone by.

“Ramu went back to directing each of his last few productions, whether Rakht Charitra, Agyaat, Sarkar Raj, Sarkar, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag, Nishabd or Shiva in the interim period”, adds the veteran.

However, as things stand today, Ramu is pretty gung ho about making films with other directors and is all set to announce his plans. When asked to comment on the concrete timelines, Ramu commented, “It is a little too early to divulge the whole plan. Announcement around the new line up would be made soon. Just wait a little.”

We hope the wait is indeed worth it, Ramu.

Panaji, Nov 23 (IANS) More than 4,000 films from the archives of Films Division of India (FDI) will be soon available online, a top official said Tuesday.

FDI director Kuldip Sinha said that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed with National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) to market the films made by them.

Both FDI and NFDC are government of India enterprises, under the information and broadcasting ministry.

Sinha said FDI, accused of ignoring the commercial aspects of filmmaking, will focus on marketing and distribution.

‘Earlier, we did not have the expertise or the infrastructure to market our films. With the arrangement with NFDC now, we can hope to earn some revenue from the sale of these films,’ Sinha said.

Rani Mukherjee, Kareena Kapoor

Ever since it was announced, Excel Entertainment and Aamir Khan Productions’ film starring Aamir Khan and directed by Reema Kagti has been in the news. There were speculations all the while as to who the lucky two heroines would be who would be paired opposite Aamir in this suspense flick. Now the suspense (pun intended) is over and it’s none other than Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor who have been signed on for this ambitious project.

This is the first time that Aamir, Rani and Kareena will be starring in the same film and it’s indeed a casting coup for sure. It may be recalled that Rani starred opposite Aamir early in her career in the smash-hit Ghulam and was even part of the historical Mangal Pandey -The Rising. Bebo meanwhile was Aamir’s co-star in last year’s blockbuster 3 Idiots.

Now with the trio coming together for this project, things are only going to get hotter in the days to come.

Should 'Bigg Boss', 'Rakhi Ka Insaaf' be relegated to adult slot?

By India Abroad
Tuesday Nov 23 6:45 PM

Mumbai, Nov 23 (IANS) From suggestions to ban such TV shows completely to wondering how much of adult content can be curbed, television and film celebrities say ultimately the decision whether to watch reality shows like ‘Bigg Boss’ and ‘Rakhi Ka Insaaf’, which the government wants shifted to the late night slot, should lie with the people.

Amit Khanna, veteran Media Expert & Chairman Reliance Entertainment: About three years ago the government had set up a committee to examine the question of censorship on television. No solutions were found. Because there are no readymade solutions to the question of regulating a moral code for the home medium. With internet making every possible channel accessible to everyone how can we stop any section of people from watching what they want to? This is where the question of self-censorship comes in. Every channel has an ombudsman who decides what should or should not go. Evidently this method of monitoring material is not working.

Shekhar Suman: I don’t see any point in curbing these shows when the viewers are seeing and enjoying them. What can be done is to ban these shows completely. Because they are highly offensive. There’s nothing that kids watch at 9 p.m. that they can’t watch at 11 p.m. And then there’s that other monster, the internet!’

Purab Kohli: My problem is not so much the adult content. It’s the crass way the content is showcased. Adult content can be monitored, not curbed.

Payal Rohatgi: I can only comment on ‘Bigg Boss’ as I was a participant on it and have observed the show closely. An adult programme contains nudity, violence including physical fights. There’s none of this in ‘Bigg Boss’. Even the abusive language is beeped out. So I don’t think it qualifies as adult content. If the I &B Ministry says it is adult content then a lot of the news channels would also come under scrutiny. We regularly see bloodshed, violence and sex on news channels.

Kavita Barjatya, TV producer, Sooraj Barjatya‘s sister: Some of the content is a little unsuitable for family viewing. So I agree with the decision to change the slot. I’d personally not make a show as controversial as these. But then nowadays even newspapers have ‘adult’ content. How much can be curbed?

Shristi Behl: I understand the reason for the time shift. But I don’t think that’s the way to go about it. At the end of the day the only effective censorship is the one at home. Those who don’t want to watch won’t at 9 p.m. Those who want to watch will even at 11 p.m.

Sonu Sood: It’s definitely not advisable for children to watch these shows. Pushing forward their timings is a wise thing to do. The TRPs war is pushing the channels to cross the boundaries of decorum at primetime.

Siddharth Malhotra, film & TV director: It shouldn’t be curbed as there is an audience for such shows. But yes, nowadays to get the TRPs the content drivers stoop really low. A line needs to be drawn about what goes on television. I am not against adult content. If that’s what needs to be shown then the late-night slot makes sense.

Simi Garewal: It takes one insensitive person to cross the boundary of decency. Here two of them did it, Rakhi Sawant and Dolly Bindra. In Europe all adult fare goes on air after 11 p.m. No harm in that. But if people are going to use abusive language freely we can’t expect families and children to watch. It’s up to the individual channels to decide what is more important.

Prasoon Joshi: In the absence of a self-regulating media body and the fact that we live in a country where the majority of the homes have a single TV, programmes with provocative content should have primetime slots.

Vishal Dadlani: People get the entertainment they deserve. We are voyeurs by nature, so the below-zero-intellect crap is dished out to us. I don’t believe in censorship. But I do believe the channels should voluntarily regulate the timings for such shows.

Sajid Khan: I don’t think these shows should be curbed. It’s the viewers’ choice what they want to see. Every TV set comes with a remote control.

Chetan Hansraj, TV actor: It’s people’s mindsets that need to be changed. I feel all content is ok. People have the remote in their hands to avoid what they don’t like.

Anuradha Prasad, TV producer and owner of channel E24: Curbing is not the solution. At the same time we can’t afford to brush aside the larger picture and the ground realities.

Pooja Bedi: I don’t think what’s shown in ‘Bigg Boss’ exceeds what we see in advertisements and in films. There have to be clear definitions of what constitutes adult content and those definitions should apply across all media.

Shailendra Singh, CEO, Percept: The content on ‘Bigg Boss’ and ‘Rakhi Ka Insaaf’ is shocking and very disturbing for family audiences. I am dismayed by the standards we are setting for our coming generations. We need to redefine the boundaries of decency on the home medium.

Ranvijay, veejay-reality show anchor-actor: I think the decision taken by the authorities must be respected. But people who watch these shows will do so irrespective of the timing.

Prem Kishen, veteran television producer: 11 p.m. slot is apt for adult content. But is there a barometer to define adult content too considering what viewers get to see in fiction shows? Today’s viewer only wants something controversial to discuss over a meal. Content providers are willing to go to any lengths to have the upper hand.

SRK gets impressed by Hrithik's performance in Guzaarish

SRK gets impressed by Hrithik’s performance in Guzaarish Click here to add this article to My Clips
By Subhash K. Jha, November 23, 2010 – 11:22 IST

Shahrukh Khan

It’s the star-wives’ club at work. Mrs. Shah Rukh Khan and Mrs. Hrithik Roshan have brought their two superstar-husbands together. On Friday night, when Shah Rukh Khan watched Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish with his close family and friends, he was so moved by the film and Hrithik Roshan’s performance that he yanked his younger colleague out of slumber and made him immediately drive down to his bungalow ‘Mannat’.

No one says no to King Khan. Dead tired and fighting off a viral attack, Hrithik had no choice but to drive down to Mannat. Shah Rukh and Hrithik discussed Guzaarish and Hrithik’s performance until 2 am.

Says a source, “Shah Rukh had asked for a print of Guzaarish because he’s very fond of Hrithik. Also because Shah Rukh had played a physically challenged character in My Name Is Khan. He was curious to see how Hrithik had approached the character of a physically disabled hero. What started as profession inquisitiveness, turned into a complete involvement with the on-screen goings-on.

Shah Rukh felt Hrithik in Guzaarish out-excelled his own performance in My Name Is Khan. Shah Rukh also feels Guzaarish was way superior to what the director Sanjay Bhansali had achieved with Shah Rukh in Devdas.”

Half-way through the film, Shah Rukh rang up Hrithik and asked him to come home immediately. The two are close friends and their wives are even closer. Says Hrithik, “In fact, Sussanne was already at Mannat. When Shah Rukh wanted me to go over I had no choice. He’s always very generous,” says Hrithik.

It is rare for a colleague to be so generous towards another colleague’s stand-out performance, especially when he has given an equally riveting performance in the same genre during the same year.

Says a source, “Shah Rukh in My Name Is Khan and Hrithik in Guzaarish portraying two inspirational protagonists suffering from a crippling disability, will be the two top contenders for the best-actor nominations this year. By so generously acknowledging Hrithik’s performance, Shah Rukh has dissolved the competitive edge between two superstars.”

All eyes on 'Ra.One'

By Taran Adarsh, November 23, 2010 – 08:15 IST

Shahrukh Khan

RA.ONE seems to be the most awaited film. Going by the discussions on the film, even though SRK is yet to release the first look of his home-production, it is evident that viewers across the globe are awaiting this SRK film for more reasons than one. The discussions across message boards/forums pertain to varied topics, right from the special effects to SRK’s look in the film to the release date of this keenly anticipated movie.

Initially slated for release in June 2011, it is speculated that the film will now release in the second half of 2011, although the producers are yet to finalize a date. That’s because the VFX will take time to achieve the desired results. In fact, Anubhav’s tweet says it all: “The VFx team and I are still figuring when we can deliver the film. Then my friends, The Producer will announce the date. But soon now…”

The question is, with DON 2 slated for release in December 2011, will RA.ONE arrive a few months earlier or a few months later? After all, there has to be a sufficient gap between two biggies starring the same actor. Even the launch of the promos should be planned accordingly, so that they don’t overlap each other.

With Rajnikant’s ROBOT setting the standards, one expects RA.ONE to go a step forward vis-à-vis the special effects and wow the audiences across the globe. And knowing SRK and his penchant for perfection, one is more than sure that RA.ONE will turn out to be a visual delight, at par with the Hollywood counterparts.

Only home-productions henceforth for Salman?

Only home-productions henceforth for Salman? Click here to add this article to My Clips
By Taran Adarsh, November 23, 2010 – 08:19 IST

Salman Khan

It’s a known fact that almost all actors have turned producers or have their family members producing films for them. The industry is abuzz with the speculation that Salman Khan has decided to concentrate on home-productions henceforth, a decision that took shape after some of his producers defaulted on his remuneration in the past. Also, the super success of brother Arbaaz Khan’s debut production DABANGG seems to have made the family think about concentrating on home-productions for the time being.

However, the news could be part speculation, part truth, since Salman is currently shooting for Bhushan Kumar’s READY [directed by Anees Bazmee] and has committed to do a film [KICK] for Sajid Nadiadwala, which will be directed by Shirish Kunder. Of course, bro-in-law Atul Agnihotri’s film BODYGUARD will roll immediately after READY is complete and is slated for release in Eid 2011. Also in the pipeline are DABANGG 2 and PARTNER 2, which, again, will see the involvement of his family members.

Ramaa - The Saviour

We often grumble that we don’t make films targeted at kids, unlike the West where this genre has cut across barriers and reached out to not only kids, but also teens and adults. RAMAA – THE SAVIOUR tries to go into a zone where no Hindi film has visited in the past: Video gaming.

But a terrific idea is no guarantee for a terrific film. Everything depends on how gripping and absorbing the screenplay is and how deftly the director executes the subject material. RAMAA – THE SAVIOUR has some attention-grabbing moments, but they are few and far between.

It’s a story of six kids – Rohan, Riddhi, Kunal, Komal, Sameer and Saanjh. The kids play a newly launched video game – The Last Battle – and while playing the game, they suddenly find themselves on an isolated island. The children, while exploring the island, run into trouble. Riddhi is attacked by a giant, Vali [Khali], but is rescued by Ramaa [Sahil Khan], who lives in this jungle all alone. Danger arrives in the form of a boat commanded by Kali with a small army of mercenaries and a scientist-assistant Samara [Tanushree Dutta]. The rest of the tale depicts the fight between the good and the evil.

It’s a tough call to cast the right faces when you set out to attempt a kiddie film. They need to look the parts, but most importantly, live the parts as well. The kids in RAMAA – THE SAVIOUR pass the test with good marks.

But it’s the writing that plays a spoilsport and doesn’t do justice to the concept and the efforts invested in the project. Let me explain. To start with, there should have been some detailing on the protagonist [Sahil Khan], who comes across as a mix of Tarzan and Conan The Barbarian. He has the ability to connect via telepathy with humans and animals, we’re told, but what is he doing in the secluded island-jungle? Besides, what’s Vali’s [Khali] connection with Ramaa? Also, why were they fighting in the first place? Is Vali human or demon or spirit? Tanushree’s character isn’t well penned either. She belongs to the evil camp, but crosses over to Ramaa’s side without any valid justification.

Director Haadi Abrar deserves marks for opting for an innovative plot, but the writing lets him down. The action scenes [action: Peter Hein] are the mainstay of the enterprise. The fight on the river in particular is fantastic. Sejal Shah’s cinematography captures the forests with expertise. Amongst the songs [Siddharth-Suhas], the one filmed on the kids, ‘We Don’t Need’, is truly energetic.

Sahil Khan exhibits his physique to the optimum, but the screenplay doesn’t offer him scope to exhibit histrionics. Tanushree surprises in action scenes. She’s wonderful. The new villain, Taleb, looks ferocious. Khali is okay. The kids, all of them, are super confident.

On the whole, RAMAA – THE SAVIOUR isn’t convincing.
